Health and Safety policy
Waterloo Removals Health and Safety Policy
Waterloo Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and standards that guide the way we plan and deliver our work across our service area.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our operations. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective controls in every aspect of our removal services, including packing, loading, transport, unloading and storage.
We are committed to continuously improving our health and safety performance, reviewing our systems and learning from experience so that our services remain safe, reliable and professionally managed.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Waterloo Removals has overall responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented and maintained. Management will provide visible leadership in health and safety matters and ensure that adequate resources, equipment and training are available to meet our obligations.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for:
Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out for all relevant tasks and locations.
Implementing safe systems of work and ensuring they are followed.
Monitoring working practices and addressing unsafe conditions or behaviours promptly.
Ensuring that staff are competent for the tasks they undertake and receive appropriate instruction, information and supervision.
Reviewing incidents, near misses and customer feedback to identify areas for improvement.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, including temporary and agency staff, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Every team member is expected to:
Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided.
Use equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly.
Report hazards, unsafe conditions, near misses and incidents without delay.
Cooperate with management in implementing safety measures and improvements.
Respect customers property and premises, maintaining safe and tidy working areas at all times.
Employees must not misuse or interfere with anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare and must not undertake tasks for which they have not been trained or authorised.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Waterloo Removals will identify and assess health and safety risks associated with our activities, taking into account manual handling, use of lifting equipment, vehicle movements, access to properties, working at height when required, use of packing materials and storage operations.
Based on these assessments we will develop and maintain safe systems of work that include:
Planning each move to allow safe access and egress at collection and delivery points.
Using appropriate lifting techniques and team lifts for heavy or awkward items.
Using trolleys, dollies, straps and other equipment to reduce manual handling risks.
Securing loads safely in vehicles to prevent movement and damage during transport.
Maintaining clear communication between team members during complex or high risk tasks.
Risk assessments and procedures will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in work practices, equipment or locations.
Training and Competence
We recognise that competence and awareness are essential to safe removals work. Waterloo Removals will provide induction training for all new staff, covering company safety rules, emergency procedures, manual handling basics and equipment use.
Ongoing training will be provided where needed, which may include advanced manual handling techniques, use of specialist lifting equipment, vehicle safety, working in confined or challenging spaces and incident reporting. Records of training and qualifications will be maintained and reviewed to ensure that staff remain competent for the work they undertake.
Vehicles, Equipment and Maintenance
Waterloo Removals will ensure that all vehicles and equipment used in our removal services are suitable for their intended purpose, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. This includes removal vehicles, tail lifts, ramps, trolleys, lifting aids and any other tools or devices used by our teams.
Pre use checks will be carried out and any defects reported immediately. Faulty equipment will be taken out of service until it is repaired or replaced. Only trained and authorised personnel may operate specialist equipment.
Customer and Public Safety
We will take all reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors, neighbours and members of the public in the areas where we operate. This includes:
Keeping walkways and access routes clear and free from trip hazards.
Using warning signs or barriers where appropriate, particularly near vehicle loading areas.
Parking and positioning vehicles safely, with consideration for pedestrians and other road users.
Minimising noise, obstruction and disruption wherever possible.
Handling customer belongings with care to prevent damage, spills or accidents.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work related ill health must be reported promptly to management, recorded and investigated where appropriate. We will analyse incident data to identify trends and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures will be in place for situations such as fire, serious injury, vehicle incidents and hazardous conditions. Employees will be informed of their responsibilities in an emergency and must cooperate fully in drills and practice exercises.
Consultation and Communication
Waterloo Removals encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, make suggestions and participate in discussions about improving safety performance. Information about health and safety, including policy updates and changes to procedures, will be communicated through briefings, meetings and written guidance.
Monitoring, Review and Policy Updates
Compliance with this Health and Safety Policy will be monitored through workplace inspections, supervisory checks, incident reviews and feedback from staff and customers. Where shortcomings are identified, appropriate actions will be taken to address them.
This policy will be reviewed regularly and revised as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice, company operations and lessons learned from experience. The latest version of the policy will be made available to employees and customers upon request.
Waterloo Removals expects everyone involved in its activities to support and uphold this policy so that we provide a professional removal service that is safe, responsible and considerate of all those affected by our work.
